|
David, principal euphonium in Central Florida Winds has had a love for music from a young age. David's greatest influence was his grandfather, Tom Mullinex, a well known jazz trumpet player in the mid west. David's grandfather is widely known for his skills in dixieland and big band music. His grandfather is also known for his work with Randy Carmichael, son of the late, great, Hoagy Carmichael. Growing up around his grandfather it is not a surprise that David would fall in love with music. His music training began at age seven with the piano. When David was 13 he picked up the euphonium and was heavily involved with music during his junior high school and high school years. Upon graduation David took a year off from school before starting at Brevard Community College. During the three years David was at BCC he was lucky enough to have Jim Bishop as his band director and lessons in trombone, euphonium, and tuba from David Schmidt, current trombone teacher at Stetson University in Deland Florida. After leaving BCC David transferred to Indiana University, studing euphonium and tuba with one of the country's leading tuba teachers, Daniel Pererantoni. David was also lucky enough to take weekly lessons from one the greatest tuba players in the world, Harvey Phillips, who played with David 's grandfather in his dixieland band. David ended up getting a degree in business management and a degree in euphonium/tuba performance. Today David works at Dollar General stores. He started off as a part time cashier during college and is now a division manager for half the state of Florida with 232 stores starting in Jacksonville and ending in Miami. David is also widely known as one of the top Floridian night club DJ's with residencies in some of the most famous clubs in Florida. He currently holds jobs in Salvation, Twist and Twilo, all in South Beach in Miami. In his free time David enjoys playing music whenever possible. He is currently principal euphonium and principal tuba with the Community Band of Brevard, principal euphonium with Central Florida Winds and the Tampa Wind Symphony and ensemble euphonium in the Southern Winds. He also plays tenor horn with the Central Florida Brass Band. Known for his choral skills, David sings tenor in the Brevard Chorale and the Central Florida Gilbert and Sullivan Society. He is also the hand bell director and the assistant choir director for the first Presbyterian church in Cocoa Beach Florida. David lives in Cocoa Beach Florida
with his mentor Glenn Arnold and his two dogs, Max and Jack. In his free
time David is an avid nature lover and is either camping or hiking somewhere
in Florida. |
