Jo-An Smukala plays E-flat and B-flat clarinet in the Central Florida Winds. She is a recently retired music teacher from New York, where she taught for 32 years. Most of her teaching experience is at in elementary level band where she taught 4th and 5th graders. Jo-An graduated from the State University of New York at Fredonia, majoring in music education as a clarinetist. In 1995, she earned a Master of Science in Instructional Technology from the New York Institute of Technology. She is active in creating with her computer skills in the areas of desktop publishing and computerized sewing and embroidery. Some of Jo-An’s musical accomplishments include being a charter member of the Orange County (NY) Music Educators Wind Ensemble for 16 years, performing regularly in the pit orchestras of high school musicals, performing in the Classic Choral Society Chamber Orchestra and with the Utica (NY) Symphony for several years. Jo-An is a certified NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) adjudicator and was the treasurer of the Orange County Music Educators Association from 1996-2004. She is presently the secretary of the Hammock Lakes Homeowner’s Association in Vero Beach. Jo-An and her husband, Al (also a clarinetist in CFW) moved to Vero Beach in June 2005 and have been enjoying the great weather and cultural opportunities there. They are both honored to play in the Central Florida Winds. |
